I think about how my dad’s generation learned new skills. Mostly it was a manual, a neighbor who happened to know something, or trial and error with nobody to ask when you got stuck. Now you can watch someone talented at the exact thing you’re trying to do, pause them mid-sentence, rewind, and try again. It’s not a replacement for a real mentor, but it’s a pretty good stand-in when you don’t happen to have one down the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say YouTube has become a kind of open university for people who are done with their careers but not done learning. No tuition, no deadlines, no test at the end. Just a search bar and whatever you’re curious about that week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn’t expect one of the defining features of my retirement to be a video platform, but here we are. If you’re retired and haven’t gone down one of these rabbit holes yet, pick something you’ve always wondered about and just search for it. You might end up with a hobby.
