Obama – The New Lincoln?

A couple of weeks ago, you couldn’t turn on a TV or a radio or open a newspaper without seeing comparisons of Barack Obama to Abraham Lincoln. It was enough to make anyone want to throw up.

But while listening to Ralph Bristol on WWTN during my drive in to work this morning, I realized that the comparison might (unfortunately) be accurate.

Lincoln was the president when the country was torn apart by the secession of several states. Bristol’s topic this morning was a poll he had on his web site asking the following question: Would you support a secession movement to create a more conservative version of the USA? Bristol said he would, and several of his callers agreed with him.

Personally, I think it’s way too early to be talking about seceding. I do think that our founding fathers recognized that there are times when a people who are being taken advantage of by a government have the right to separate from that government and form their own, but I’m not giving up on the US of A just yet.

Yeah, times are bad (for some people). And we now have as a law the largest spending bill in history under the guise of “stimulus”. So I don’t think we’re heading in the right direction. But secession?

I’m reminded of all those liberals who said that if George Bush was elected, they’d move to France. We all thought how funny that was and how ridiculous it was. This whole talk of “secession”, especially only a month into the new administration, is ridiculous as well.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not an Obama fan by any means. He makes me wish for the good old days of President Clinton. But you don’t start with the last resort.
