I tuned in to the services at the National Cathedral in Washington this morning as the first family attended. After listening to several ministers make note of the attendance of the first family, I was struck by the way they said the name Obama. It was the same way that I’ve heard ministers so many times deliver a sermon and say the name of Jesus in a particular way – long, deliberately drawn out, and breathless – emphasizing His holiness, I suppose. Oprah may be right, perhaps Obama is The One. Or maybe their attitude smacks of idolatry. We already have American idols. This one doesn’t even have to sing for his supper.
